Daan Vandewalle records complete 'Catalogue d'oiseaux' by Oliver Messiaen

Concertgebouw Brugge and Daan Vandewalle present the recording of Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux (1956-1958), a unique opportunity to hear this 13-piece keyboard work in its entirety. Each part focuses on the singing of a specific bird, as Messiaen was not only a composer but also a passionate ornithologist. The birds' chirping, tweeting and singing herald a time of freedom in these times of corona.

'Birds do not comply with the various regulations that the governments decrete. Their cultural sector is not locked, they violate the curfew with their chants, social distancing is out of the question and they have no regard for travel restrictions. The proverb 'to be as free as a bird' resonates more than ever in times of confiment, and it is not surprising that composers throughout history have listened to the ever-varied singing of birds. Olivier Messiaen was a composer by profession and an ornithologist out of passion, and his love for birds was so great that one sometimes feels that he would have preferred to be one. I think we recognize that feeling now more than ever.'
