When we first hold an object in our hands, we often feel the urge to tap, strike or rub it… Wood, metal, stone or a stretched animal skin – every material has its own unique timbre when struck. For Beat it! 4.0, we return to these primal sounds of nature for three days. Ten drum sets in Enno Poppe’s Streik, an installation of over a hundred drums, percussion legend Evelyn Glennie and a gigantic orchestra stand in contrast to the fragility of a Japanese grandmaster, trance on triangles & South Indian percussion wizardry. From thunderous and roaring to restrained and contemplative: percussion touches the essence.
