A recognised misunderstood genius
Hector Berlioz transformed Romanticism. Not only did this composer bend the prevailing conventions to his own musical vision, but he was also one of the first to make full use of the orchestra's rich range of timbres. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is one of the most striking orchestral works of the 19th century. But his Lélio, ou le retour à la vie and Grande messe des morts are also surprisingly experimental. Musicologist Yves Senden paints us a total picture of this groundbreaking composer.
