Young Spanish dance makers explore the boundaries of heteronormativity

Bits of Dance – since 2018, a platform and sounding board for new dance makers in Bruges– transforms into Night of Bits. Night of Bits #1 is a double bill featuring two Spanish dance makers. Young choreographer Héctor Espuela Pablo looks at the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty from a contemporary cyborg and trans-non-binary perspective. They/Them, She/Her take(s) us on an intriguing exploration of the conflict between fiction and reality. The centrepiece of the performance is a life-size puppet – a replica of Héctor himself. In the second part, artist couple Federico Vladimir & Pablo Lilienfeld delve into the history of their mothers, who were both European war refugees named ‘Monica’. The result is a multimedia performance in which the paintings and erotic photos left behind by their mothers become the visual building blocks of a story about non-heteronormative motherhood.
