‘A new spring and a new sound …’, thus begins Herman Gorters’s famous poem Mei. It inspired Louis Andriessen for his swan song, a work that brings together hope, life and silence. Plagued by dementia, he called on the help of his friend and fellow composer Martijn Padding to complete May. It stands side by side with compositions by his role models Ravel and Stravinsky. All three create, in their own way, a unique musical world using timbre, rhythm and orchestral imagination as building blocks.
