Night of Bits #2: Rewriting the Ritual

In Night of Bits #2, two Colombian and two Palestinian artists join forces in an evening dedicated to young choreographers. All four use dance as a bridge between heritage, resistance and imagination.

Quinceañeras by Estefanía Álvarez Ramírez and Luisa Fernanda Alfonso dissects the Latin American ritual for fifteen-year-olds and transforms it into an intimate, exuberant celebration of femininity, friendship and migration. From their perspective as migrants, they rewrite traditions as forms of resistance and self-affirmation, in a festive, hybrid atmosphere of dance, music and ritual.

In relation to whom? مرتاحة؟ by Marah Haj and Nur Gharabli follows the grandmother-mother-daughter line and explores how memories and ancestral knowledge are passed on through the female body. Inspired by the traditional Palestinian zaghrouda – the women's cry that sounds in both joy and sorrow – a dialogue emerges between generations, in which rituals both support and constrain, and the body once again becomes a place of resilience.
