This edition of Anima Insight explores the experimental Sturm und Drang period. This movement was accompanied by a new cultural awareness that was also apparent in music: composers played with subjectivity, extremes of emotion, chiaroscuro and with a preference for the strange and unexpected, for theatricality. Like Mozart, Haydn was drawn to this movement for a time, and this was reflected in their compositions from around 1770, scores that would eventually serve as models for the fledgling symphony. From their pens, a new style was born: Viennese Classicism.
