No story is more romantic than Romeo and Juliet. Sponsored by Paganini and inspired by Shakespeare and actress Harriet Smithson, Berlioz composed his brilliant ‘symphonie dramatique’. Despite this subtitle, the main characters cannot be seen and neither does the composer give any stage directions. Aïda Gabriëls nevertheless brings Berlioz’s symphonic masterpiece to the stage and provides an idiosyncratic interpretation.
