On 21 March 1829 – Bach’s 144th birthday – Felix Mendelssohn performed the St Matthew Passion for the first time since its premiere on 11 April 1727 in Leipzig. This revival inspired others and ultimately formed the basis for the rediscovery and enduring reappraisal of Bach’s oeuvre. Three centuries after its premiere, the timeless humanity of this Passion still makes it an indispensable work.
