Disney avant la lettre

Rameau never got to see his ‘tragédie lyrique’ Les Boréades; the stage version of the opera only premiered in 1982. Queen Alphise is in love with Abaris, a stranger, but tradition demands that she marry a descendant of Boreas, the God of the north wind. Like a true deus ex machina, Apollo lends a hand: the marriage is arranged and a happy ending is assured. In moving arias and catchy dances, Rameau shows himself at his best. Never has a tragedy been so swinging.
