Anselm Adornes resolutely sided with Burgundy and the family flourished in the service of the dukes. After the death of Charles the Bold, however, the rebellious citizens of Bruges accused several 'lords on horseback' of fraud. Adornes paid the fine they imposed and hastened away to Scotland. Bruges’s bridges burned. Paul Van Nevel juxtaposes the two conflicting parties musically: a masterly L'homme armé Mass from a Burgundian manuscript in dialogue with Bruges stars, such as Obrecht and Busnois.
