Composer Luc Brewaeys was second to none at playing with timbres. His music – often exuberant and spectacular – therefore sounds as exotic as it does classical. Black Rock Unfolding, for example, is an incredibly virtuoso piece that demands the utmost from the cellist. With the addition of electronics, the solo develops into a polyphonic tangle of cello sounds. That is also true of Ni fleurs ni courronnes, a work for violin and electronics Brewaeys composed in memory of his good friend Jonathan Harvey. At the request of the Concertgebouw, Richard Barrett, in turn, wrote a tribute to Brewaeys.
