There were many links between the Haydns and the Mozarts: friendly, collegial, educational and not least artistic. Michael Haydn was five years younger than his more famous brother Joseph and spent almost his entire career in Salzburg – the link with Mozart is quickly made. Sadly for Michael, one of his six string quintets was long attributed to Joseph. For several decades, this latter worked for the Esterházy family, composing numerous works for his patron, the baryton-playing Prince Nikolaus.
