In the Middle Ages, Christian penance was a much greater part of daily life than it is today. King David is said to have written seven psalms himself to show repentance for his sins. These live on in almost every book of hours and have inspired many a composer. Hans Ausloos provides insight into the religious context of these penitential psalms, while a musicologist explains their polyphonic tradition.
