A melodious look back at childhood
Schumann’s Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) is not music for children, but an adult’s recollection of the earliest years of life. Each piece in the series captures a fleeting moment – play, wonder, dreaminess – and exudes intimacy, nostalgia and poetic simplicity. Matthieu Idmtal contrasts this with Chopin’s Third Piano Sonata, a highlight of the Romantic piano repertoire. In Medtner’s Sonata Reminiscenza, too, lyricism, polyphony and harmony merge into a meditative reflection on the past.
