Masterpiece Mozart

Masterpiece Mozart

Requiem

  • Mozart’s best known and most mysterious work
  • except for the first four minutes, Mozart only sketched out fragments before his death in October 1791; these were completed by many authors
  • the most performed version is by Mozart's assistant Franz Xaver Süßmayr, who chose to recycle the Requiem aeternam for the final section
  • created during an exceptionally productive period, just after the masterpieces La clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte
  • Mozart feverishly composing on his deathbed, spurred on by a jealous Salieri, a scene reproduced by Pushkin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Peter Schaffer and recently deceased Miloš Forman in Amadeus, is actually nothing more than a myth
