As a puny human, how do you contemplate the immensity of the universe? That weighty question gave birth to Karl Van Welden's cycle United Planets. In this instalment – EARTH I – a piano and a pianist are gradually, gently buried beneath a huge layer of felt. This gives rise to a new world. What at first seemed threatening turns out to be protective. Mountainous landscapes – thrown up by the terrifying collision of tectonic plates – become aesthetic experiences.
