Should musicians speak out about social issues? Castalian String Quartet’s young members certainly think so! They bring us Charlotte Bray’s Ungrievable Lives, thirteen miniatures for string quartet, each representing a million refugee children. This is set against the vivid, shifting moods of Britten's String Quartet no. 1 and the murmuring 'inner voices' Sibelius penned during a difficult period. These voices meander between gloomy introspection and – as Sibelius wrote to his wife – ‘the kind that raise a smile on oneʼs face even at the moment of death’.
