Bartók’s lucid and mysterious fable, clarified in music and discussion

Béla Bartók’s only opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, is musically and dramatically unique. It only has two characters: Bluebeard and Judith. But after that one hour of music, Judith has explored the deepest depths of Bluebeard’s male psyche. The castle symbolises Bluebeard’s soul. Cost what it may, Judith wants to open it up - with harrowing consequences. Béla Balázs based the libretto on Perrault’s folktale, but gave it a much more powerful psychological and symbolic dimension. In his score Bartók evokes an unprecedented sense of mystery and oppression. Before the concert, conductor Iván Fischer and psychologist Dirk De Wachter explore the deeper dimension of the work. Will they achieve greater insight into the soul of the work, or will they simply raise more questions?
