‘Nicht Bach, sondern Meer sollte er heissen!‘ When Beethoven compared Bach to the sea rather than to a stream, he was referring to the depth and vastness of Bach’s oeuvre. But Bach’s family seem to have been equally boundless. Harpsichordist Andreas Staier explores the musical family ties: from uncle Johann Christoph, who Johann Sebastian called 'the profound one', to cousin Walther, who like himself, was not averse to a bit of Vivaldi at the keyboard.
Music by members of the Bach family: Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784) & Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788)
Music by members of the Bach family: Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748),
