Free-spirited Carmen yearns for love. Obsessive soldier Don José falls completely under her spell. When Carmen leaves him for charismatic toreador Escamillo, the unbearable tension pushes them to extremes. Director-choreographer Wim Vandekeybus takes on one of the grandest productions Opera Ballet Vlaanderen has ever staged. On the one hand, he explores the characters’ deeper psychology via his characteristic and intense movement language. And on the other hand, he unearths a ritual layer that reveals the opera’s universal and almost mythological power.
