In a perpetual circle of protective fire: that is how the god Wotan leaves behind his favourite daughter Brünnhilde before he departs at the end of Wagner's Die Walküre. It is a hard but loving farewell. Equally impassioned and enthusiastic is Schumann's love for his Rhineland in his third and last symphony.
