Audience favourite evokes German melancholy and submission

In a perpetual circle of protective fire: that is how the god Wotan leaves behind his favourite daughter Brünnhilde before he departs at the end of Wagner's Die Walküre. It is a hard but loving farewell. Equally impassioned and enthusiastic is Schumann's love for his Rhineland in his third and last symphony. The Budapest Festival Orchestra shine in these ‘tone paintings’ of romantic fervour.
