‘Men who feel love have a good heart … We live through love alone’. To what extent Martin Helmchen identifies with Papageno, is an open question. What is certain is that he and his partner, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, are second to none at conveying Beethoven's admiration for Mozart. In turn, Beethoven then became the hero of later composers, such as Mendelssohn, Schumann and Fauré, all three of whom wrote intimate and intense repertoire for cello and piano: music as an artistic embrace.
