Butterflies, from muse to oracle
The artist knows his or her muse. But what about the scientist? Animals can be an inspiring and revealing model, offering both fundamental insights and a subject for practical applications. Professor Hans Van Dyck has a passion for butterflies. What can their fluttering and rich colouring tell us? It turns out that butterflies are a barometer of life on our planet. Butterflies also inspire composers, from Schumann to Saariaho. Cellist Arne Deforce translates their flitting lives into music.
