In Answer Machine Tape, 1987, composer Philip Venables combines the messages on American artist David Wojnarowicz’s answering machine with a ‘cyborg’ piano that doubles as a typewriter via sensors. The tape in question holds the messages recorded in the days immediately prior to the death of David’s ex-partner, photographer Peter Hujar. They offer us both a heart-rending testimony and an intimate look at the New York art scene in the midst of the AIDS epidemic. Afterwards, our Season’s Thinker Fleur Pierets makes a declaration of love to a Bruges woman who – according to the Concertgebouw audience – is unfairly overlooked. In an ardent speech, she calls for a more inclusive world.
