A tragedy about power and Shakespearean plots, set to the beautiful music of Prokofiev

The films Sergei Eisenstein directed during the first decades of the 20th century are absolute masterpieces of film history. For his Ivan the Terrible, Sergei Prokofiev composed an extremely dramatic and lively soundtrack that perfectly complements Eisenstein’s eloquent imagery. Prokofiev and Eisenstein turned out to be kindred spirits. Their unlimited imagination and flexibility produced some perfect collaborations. With chameleonic versatility, Prokofiev's music responds to the dramatic storyline. He enhances the magnificent choral parts, for instance, with uncommonly rich orchestral colouring. After Prokofiev's death, Soviet conductor Stassevitch rearranged the music. He added texts from Eisenstein's film and thus forged the soundtrack into an impressive oratorio. Jan Decleir plays the role of Ivan the Terrible in a tragedy about power and Shakespearean plots, set to the beautiful music of Prokofiev.

Roadworks

Because of the refurbishment of 't Zand, Concertgebouw is harder to reach than usual. The main entrance of the Concertgebouw remains accessible. A temporary road through the works has been foreseen. Read more
