Comforting works by Bach
‘I have enough’ is what the elderly Simeon says when he beholds the Messiah. He can now die in peace. In Bach’s time, death was embraced as deliverance from the earthly vale of tears, and that is why this beautiful cantata sounds not heart-rending, but longingly accepting.
