Reason and emotion in balance on the piano

Beastly difficult to play but wonderful to hear. That is Ravel through and through. But don't label his piano music as impressionism. Ravel was there at its birth, but he didn't want to be confined to that box. His music is much more than colours and atmospheres. Ravel worked more like an engineer: everything is calculated, nothing is accidental. But the result is never numerical. This is deeply human emotion that sets every fibre of your body vibrating.
