Redemption
If Bach's contemporaries were united behind one idea, it was that this life here on earth was but a brief, tribulation-filled pause on the path to heaven. Prayers, good works and certainly Bach's music all revolved around one thing: seeking redemption, with Jesus as the faithful guide. Collegium Vocale Gent echo this idea of deliverance with some beautiful Bach cantatas, to which Philippe Herreweghe this year adds Graupner. Perhaps we can also liberate Bach himself?
