Jazz Brugge Special

Collaborating with Norwegian organist and ethnomusicologist Sigbjørn Apeland, Belgian trio Donder recorded the album Het Verdriet (Sorrow) in Hof Bladelin, a mediaeval city palace. Flemish polyphony and folk music provide the basis for exciting, stripped back melancholy. That fresh new music can be inspired by early music is also proven by world star Dave Douglas in his ode to the Ghent Altarpiece. In it the music of Van Eyck's contemporary Guillaume Dufay is translated to a contemporary context and injected with the improvisational freedom of jazz.
