Schubert biographer portrays a timeless genius

More than six hundred Lieder, twenty-one piano sonatas, a dozen symphonies (finished and unfinished), a whole range of Masses, operas, string quartets... The breadth of Franz Schubert's oeuvre is simply staggering. And yet Schubert managed to give each of those many thousands of compositions his own unique and recognisable style. But what does a typical Schubert melody, orchestration or harmony actually consist of? In this four-part course, musicologist Yves Knockaert, author of a brand new Schubert biography, explains.
