Pierre-Laurent Aimard powerful in Bartók's monumental concerto

Mahler composed his Sixth Symphony during a very happy period of his life. It nevertheless sounds melancholy and deeply tragic: a foreboding perhaps of his own sad fate. Paradoxically, Mahler’s obsession with suffering and death is always coupled with an irrepressible energy and a hunger for life. Bartók's First Piano Concerto, a massive and intense monument, is equally dark. Pierre-Laurent Aimard plays with percussive power and engaging intensity.
