Groundbreaking orchestra combines activism with musical fireworks
Founder Chi-chi Nwanoku wants her Chineke! Orchestra to be a catalyst for more diversity in the predominantly white bastion of classical music: all of its musicians are black or belong to an ethnic minority. She also wants to promote diversity in programming. In this concert, for instance, the romantic Violin Concerto of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – sometimes called the black Dvořák or Mahler – stands fraternally alongside works by Brahms and von Weber.
