Bach Academy Bruges 2016

Johann Sebastian Bach was raised in a musical family. But the artistic input from his Thurigian examples wasn’t enough for him. In 1705 he therefore walked more than 450 kilometres from Arnstadt to Lübeck, where Danish-German Dieterich Buxtehude was creating a vibrant and innovative music scene. Buxtehude was famous for his flawless keyboard technique, but it was primarily his Abendmusiken concert series that was already legendary and undoubtedly a great inspiration for the young Bach.

In this sixth Bach Academy Bruges, you will witness the interchange between two generations of musicians. Collegium Vocale Gent open with Membra Jesu nostri, one of Buxtehude’s most intense works, and close with, among others, Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott, a chorale that both Bach and Buxtehude put to music. In between, you will hear the Dunedin Consort, with young countertenor Iestyn Davies, Skip Sempé and Olivier Fortin, Jean Rondeau and his quartet Nevermind, marimba player Theodor Milkov, Bernard Foccroulle on the Walburga organ and many others. And let’s not forget the two preludes organised by our partners: in De Werf jazz pianist Fabian Fiorini performs, and in the Stadsschouwburg Mal Pelo presents the choreography Bach.
