Handel’s first oratorio: some of his most beautiful arias, performed by Baroque specialists
Il Ttionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (1707), Handel’s first oratorio, gives voice to an allegorical battle between vanity and transience. When Bellezza (Beauty) is tempted into a life of hedonism by Piacere (Pleasure), Tempo (Time) and Disinganno (Disillusion) persuade her against it. The oratorio’s ingenious construction and the subtle musical depiction of its characters herald Handel’s immense talent as a theatre composer. Il Trionfo contains some of his most beautiful arias, such as the now legendary ‘Lascia la spina’. Gramophone Award winner John Butt and his Dunedin Consort prove to us live why their Handel recordings are invariably acclaimed.
