AMERICAN QUARTETS
SUN 20.09.09 / 15.00

Antonín Dvorák's ‘American’ quartet is the intimate counterpart of his ninth symphony ‘From the new world’. Dvorák combines Afro-American musical elements with characteristics of Bohemian folk music. In terms of melancholic intensity, the sublime Lento measures up to the famous Adagio of Samuel Barber's string quartet. In Different trains, one of the most popular string quartets of the last decades, American minimalist Steve Reich reminisces about the train trips he used to make in his childhood years between New York and Los Angeles, when at the same time in Europe, Jewish children were being transported to their deaths in ‘other trains’. Recorded testimonies of his governess and of Holocaust survivors form the basis of the melodious parts around which this moving piece is built.
