Context

Cool, is probably the best way to characterise Frank Braley's recital. The pianist who in 1991 won the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition and today is one of the most interesting pianists of his generation, shows how swinging Bach's piano music can sound and how surprisingly polyphonic 20th century piano music can be. To distance themselves from 19th century Romanticism, composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith and Claude Debussy not only turned to baroque composers. They also looked for inspiration in jazz. On the other side of the Atlantic American composer George Gershwin, in turn, managed to reconcile European piano tradition with jazz in his own inimitable way.
