For the Bad Boys festival, pianist Daan Vandewalle brought together an unusual quartet which will investigate the relationship between the visual and the acoustic at the COME ON! ACTION! festival. The aim of Cornelius Cardew and John Cage's ‘classical’ graphic scores, which will be projected during the concert, was to ‘liberate’ musicians from the straitjacket of traditional playing techniques and forms. Apart from these scores the Bad Boys Collective will also perform work of British composer-improviser-guitarist Fred Frith. In his large-scale graphic scores project ‘Stone, Brick, Glass, Wood, Wire’, photographs of landscapes and natural phenomena are given exact indications of timing, playing technique and instrumentation. The Bad Boys reinterpret them. Photographs of architectural elements of the Concertgebouw were also used for improvisations.
